Formicary joins Hackney-based pupil mentoring scheme

London 01 April 2010 - Formicary, the provider of premier Systems Integration (SI) and software solutions, has embarked on a pupil mentoring scheme at Shacklewell Primary School, Hackney.   Formicary consultants currently participate in one-to-one weekly reading sessions with pupils.

The scheme which is co-ordinated through Inspire, the Education Business Partnership for Hackney,   gives children additional reading practice which helps develop their comprehension skills and encourages an enjoyment of books, words and literature.  It also raises the children’s self esteem, confidence and improves their social skills. 

Ben Ramadan, senior systems engineer at Formicary who is participating in the scheme says, “The scheme appealed to me as it offers an opportunity to personally and directly make a difference to a child’s education. It’s been inspiring and extremely rewarding to see my pupil improve and develop their reading skills since I started working with them.”  

Kevin Judson, senior systems engineer at Formicary adds, “Having participated in similar schemes previously I already knew how worthwhile they can be and so I jumped at the chance to join this initiative.  In the short time that I’ve been visiting Shacklewell, I can already see my pupil becoming more confident both in his reading and in his social skills, which is tremendously rewarding.” 

David Bridson, head teacher, Shacklewell Primary School concludes, “Many primary school children miss out on one-to-one reading support at home so the dedicated support and attention of a reading partner can make all the difference.  Since working with Formicary, we’re seeing clear improvements in the reading ability of the pupils participating in the programme.  The children really enjoy the Formicary visits and now positively look forward to their weekly reading sessions.”

As well as enabling Formicary to give something back into the local community, the mentoring programme is proving to be an innovative method of charitable giving beyond traditional fund-raising exercises and has become a motivating team bonding initiative.
