Formicary Flyers race into third place at the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Race

London – UK – 16th June 2008 - Formicary Ltd, an IT consultancy firm specialising in providing solutions to the financial services industry, paddled their way to success at the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat race on Sunday 8th June.  The Formicary Flyers, competing for the first time, took 3rd place out of 44 teams to win a trophy.

Dragon Boat racing is emblematic of strength, energy and competitiveness and the London Hong Kong annual event, now in its 11th year continues to grow in popularity. This year a record number of teams took part including top tier investment banks and Chinese community teams.  The day’s events consisted of three heats with the fastest 8 teams securing a place in the final.

The Formicary Flyers led by Howard Travers, a former British Dragon Boat team member (1988 – 1991) had never raced together before Sunday, yet put in a sterling effort to achieve the 2nd fastest time of the day at one minute 8.39 seconds.  

In the grand finals, the Flyers had a rocky start dropping back to 6th position, before the team found their rhythm and fought their way up to 3rd place, crossing the finish with a time of one minute 13.45 seconds. The top two teams came in at 1 minute 10.50 seconds and one minute 13.00 seconds respectively.

After the event, Howard said “We have all had a great day and everyone really pulled together to achieve a fantastic result.  In the final there is far more pressure and that is when concentration, teamwork and practice really counts. We are now looking forward to next year, when we plan to build on this initial success and take first place!”
